Art/Design by DJG (djgblog.tumblr.com)

San Francisco producer Comma is projecting holograms of his vision for the future of music. As a member of the tastemaker beat collective Frite Nite, he’s one of the fastest rising names in the Bay Area’s diverse production scene. With influences ranging from the UK underground, ambient techno, Detroit futurism, and a life-long love for hip-hop, Comma has been steadily advancing new sounds as a DJ, producer, and enthusiast of forward thinking music.

On his debut Carry The Fire EP, Comma emerges in an evolving strain of dance music influenced by dubstep, experimental beats, UK garage, and ambient. These looming, haunted tracks are rich with abstract melodies and driving rhythms that breathe and grow effortlessly. The post-garage skitter of “Coyote” illuminates an original style that is fresh and emotive, while the title track is a 136 BPM epic with driving low-end and a hook that evolves brilliantly until the last note. The similar roller “Holodeck” shows Comma’s distinct nostalgia for future visions come and gone, and his habit of creating, rather than following trends. After four of Comma’s unique productions, we are treated to a remix of “All Gods, All Masters” by recent Warp Records signee EPROM, who re-heats the track with the speaker-blowing attitude that has gained him international acclaim.

In addition to the cover art, each track on Carry The Fire is accompanied by a unique image designed by DJG. This is the ninth release on the Semisexual label, run by US electronic music veteran Mr. Projectile. Carry The Fire will be available April 20, 2010 at Commasounds.com, as well as digital retailers Juno and Addictech.

Minnesota native and nomad raver Matthew Arnold, aka Mr. Projectile, has been spotted in recent years wandering the California coastline with a Nord Modular G2 on his back.  After his 2004 album Sinking left a permanent impression on Staylucid’s collective brain, we’ve been following closely behind to hear what would follow.  Last month Projectile finally emerged with a new album, To The West, on his own Semisexual label.  The record is a chronicle of where he’s been over the last few years, and a pure beam of expression from the man who recently said he had “moved into a blue castle in the redwoods, developed superpowers, and directly experienced timelessness.”

It is with great joy that we present “Bioluminescence,” one of our favorite unreleased tracks from this album.  You can hear and buy To The West and his other releases directly from Mr. Projectile at his store:  http://projectile.bandcamp.com/

Surefire Sound 009 - Vaccine, DJG, Comma

VACCINE (NONPLUS+ – SD)
Vaccine is the production alias of Christine Clements. Having been involved with the promotions end of the industrial rock and IDM music scenes since she was a teenager, and running drum & bass and dubstep record labels with her husband, ASC, writing her own music - after she’d been promoting other people’s for years - was a logical progression. Drawing inspiration from synaesthesia and her melting pot of musical influences, Vaccine’s style has been recognized as being considerably very melodic and not necessarily as dancefloor-orientated as her male cohorts. XLR8R magazine noted her “subtle melodies and echoed vocals”, as well as stating that “(Vaccine’s) constructions aren’t necessarily main floor rave fodder, but rather, comedown music for a 6 a.m. She is also notable for being the first female producer in dubstep, within what was up until then a genre whose producers were almost, if not entirely, male. Her DJ mixes as well have attracted attention for their careful commitment to precise blends, mixing in key, and unexpected multigenre inclusions.

Vaccine is not solely writing dubstep anymore. Never one to be confined by formulas or tempo, as evidenced in her DJ mix selection, Vaccine has recently been slinging her talents further afield writing the melodic, IDM style of drum & bass popularized by Instra:mental and dBridge’s Autonomic Podcasts. She has crafted a live PA and has also been working with a fashion designer called Ernte on music for his runway shows. Recently Renoise (the program she writes music in) is pushing her as the face of their site on their music player. Look for her upcoming releases on Disfigured and Nonplus+. Surefire Sound is delighted to have her join us for her first live PA.

DJG (SUREFIRE – SF)
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean J. Grenier A.K.A DJG landed in the world of Dubstep in 2007 with his first 12″ “Shadow Skanking” b/w “Joyful Sound” on Narco.Hz. Immediate support on Rinse FM and in the clubs from DJ’s like N-Type propelled DJG to the forefront of American dubstep producers early in his career. DJG’s production style is richly melodic, emotive while full of groove and energy. Recognized early on for a more dubwise sound, DJG’s recent productions have revealed an evolution in his music, getting deeper into bass-heavy, tech-drenched, soulful tracks.

DJs ranging from Mary Anne Hobbs, N-Type, Joe Nice, Pinch, Headhunter, Skream, RSD, 2562, Djunya, Random Trio and many more have been supporting DJG’s recent and forthcoming releases. This year he was asked by Mary Anne Hobbs to produce a mix that was featured on her acclaimed Radio 1 Experimental show. When DJG gets behind the decks, his passion for the music he plays is obvious. His enthusiasm for the deeper side of dubstep and his affection for dance floor selections makes each set a spontaneous combination of the highs and lows that the sound has to offer. He has forthcoming releases on LoDubs, Wheel and Deal, Pushing Red, and Surefire Sound.

COMMA (SEMISEXUAL - SF)
Seattle born producer Ryan Gilbert, or Comma, arrived in San Francisco in 1999, where the potent drum and bass scene sparked his obsession with cutting edge sounds. Taught to DJ and produce by Boreta of the Glitch Mob, the two would form the group Slidecamp in 2005. Their debut album, due in 2010, showcases expansive melodies, complex beats, and an obsessive attention to detail that Comma has become known for in his solo work.

On his debut EP for Mr. Projectile’s Semisexual label, Comma emerges in a remote territory of dubstep influenced by ambient techno, UK garage, and experimental beats. The tracks are looming and haunted, drawing no easy comparison to his diverse influences. Live, Comma crosses boundaries with new material and forward thinking beats that can’t always be categorized.

“I first heard proper electronic music in 1992 on a radio show called Depth Probe in Minneapolis. The feeling I got instantly was: what had I been missing out on? So a huge contributing factor in the beginning was me wanting to be a contributing factor to the electronic music world. I would say that it is still the huge motivating force behind why I love making electronic music.

A chief architect of the intricate, intelligent “forest crunk” sound that defines the warped productions of his side project with the Boreta.

With an upcoming Slidecamp LP on renowned electronic label n5MD, a solo release out soon on Mr. Projectile’s Semisexual imprint, a few special remixes in the works, and an all-original live set that can only be described as an emotional journey, the bright future is under way for this wide-eyed Cascadian.

Semisexual Records Label Night at 222 Hyde Thursday!

This Thursday is the second, and last, Semisexual Night at 222 Hyde…. and to memorialize its short and poignant existence, our friend Sean has made this video flyer. More of his work is available here. I don’t know what I’m going to play, but I know I’m going to be wasted because my company’s “baseball” game is earlier that day. It’s too bad this is one of the last ever events at the 222- this is one of the only cheap, grimey clubs with a decent sound system left in san francisco.

FREE before 10:30!
