SECRET SIDEWALK

A few months ago in a dark corner of Soma, a crew of scientists descended upon the Fritemare party and turned a maze of boxes, buttons, and wires into a 45-minute freak-out session. They proceeded to wreck shop with an experimental beat set that was truly more live performance than anything else happening outside rock music circles. These guys were Bay Area producers and DJs Mike Boo, Puzzle, and Asonic Garcia, forming an elite team known as Secret Sidewalk.  They may be humble dudes, but their live set revealed their true mission of injecting soul and chaotic expression into the laptop-dominated beatscape.

“Hailing from San Francisco and Oakland, Secret Sidewalk is Mike Boo,Puzzle, and Asonic Garcia. Their use of electronic tools such as samplers, synthesizers, and self-built sound modules is with an approach that’s of true musicianship. No programmed loops, no pressing play, its ALL LIVE here. they share the sensibilities of live beatsmiths, but their sound transcends to something much deeper and more complex. There is a wide range of interests and influences amongst the trio, which translates into a very diverse sound, from song to song, as you will hear in their live sets and on their recordings.  In April the band will debut their live set, and with many shows to follow and an album in the works, you will be seeing and hearing a lot of this band in the future. get ready.”

Fritemare

From fritenite.com:

There’s nothing better than a sweaty dance party…but sometimes it’s gotta be about the nerds. Fritemare is a new party dedicated to the weird, abstract, or maybe just plain intelligent tunes that you’re too afraid to play out at your club gig. This is Epcot’s brainchild, and of course he had to keep it consistent with the 80’s throwback horror imagery. This is another new monthly music installment at the recently renovated Showdown bar on 6th and Market, but this time creative programming handled by our very own resident zombie. If you’ve caught Epcot’s DJ sets as of late, and found yourself scratching your head on how good of a DJ this guy is (isn’t he supposed to be a rapper?) don’t feel bad…he’s been doing it for years and has all the local producers newest heat that hasn’t hit the street yet.

For the first episode we have a guest appearance by Mike Boo, definitely one of SF’s unsung heroes and a wizard of many devices, who loves to keep his turntable compositions on the left side of things. If you aren’t familiar, Boo has released music on Alpha Pup and toured the world with Gunkhole, (D-Styles and Ricci Rucker), amongst helping to design futuristic electronic devices and a load of other incredible accolades. And of course we couldn’t do this without DJ Dials, who despite having a fond love of keeping ladies content on the dancefloor, has a sweet spot for the abstract electronic tracks, beat tape outtakes and all the nerdy jams that we all hold close to our hearts.

Epcot, Mike Boo and Dials…kicking off what will hopefully be a fruitful and long-standing monthly party to satisfy the cravings of all the die hard heads in the city. This will be at Showdown, this week and every first Thursday.
